Mental Health and the NDIS – How does it work?

The NDIS has the ability to help support thousands of Australians suffering from mental illness across Australia; however, eligibility remains a challenging subject. Mental health services in Australia are delivered in a variety of environments across a range of providers and funded in different methods. At Fine Care we understand firsthand how navigating the murky waters of the system and understanding how it functions with the NDIS can be a complicated and stressful affair for those dealing with mental health, psychosocial conditions and for those who provide care. Today we’ll focus on what constitutes NDIS eligibility for mental illness, and what supports are available. 

One in every five Australians, about 4 million people have a mental illness in a given year, and almost half the population has suffered a mental disorder at some point in their life. Of those individuals lies a smaller community of people whose disabilities have arisen from mental illness in a matter that affects their day to day living and their ability to engage in areas such as work, education, and social participation. In this case, it may be referred to as a Psychosocial disability and considered an eligible disability for funding under the NDIS. Due to the nature of psychosocial disabilities, the level of support needed for the illness may fluctuate. We often hear of participants going through ‘good’ periods, and ‘bad’ periods, in NDIS language, this is defined as ‘variations in intensity’ or ‘episodic’. If you are suffering from an episodic mental health disorder that needs lifelong care, you may still be eligible to access NDIS funding.

It is important to recognise that the NDIS is designed to operate with traditional government systems, such as health and education, to assist participants with disabilities in accessing support. The NDIS should not, in any case, replace them, but work alongside them. Mental health treatment must remain the primary responsibility of the health care system of each state. For instance, people with early symptoms of mental illness should also use the health care system in the first place, so that they can receive the necessary treatment so that it can be handled appropriately and effectively.

So how can the NDIS help participants with a psychosocial disability? The NDIS funds “reasonable and necessary supports” that empower participants to reach their goals and aspirations in an achievable manner. So while it won’t support medicine or clinical services accessed from current health systems, it will support participants to become independent, to be more active in social and community events, to find work and scale the ladder or make friends more comfortably. That could include funding for anything from support coordination support work, nursing , assistive technology and home modifications to career guidance and transportation to social events or help with cleaning and maintenance at home.

5 key tips to make the most of your NDIS planning meeting

Too often we hear how daunting plan meetings can be, but with the proper preparation, they do not have to be. Coming prepared to an NDIS plan meeting will significantly increase the chances of receiving the funding you need and the outcomes you desire. It is particularly crucial to be able to communicate your needs and advocate your goals effectively. Below are five key tips from our experienced disability services team to increase your chances of a successful outcome.

Clearly define your goals.

Goals describe what you want to achieve from the NDIS, and other supports and services. These goals will essentially shape your entire NDIS plan, so it’s vital to be clear about what’s important to you. If you desire a specific support, it must be related to a goal. For instance, supports such as home care and cleaning services can tie in with the goal of becoming more independent.  

Other examples of goals can include:

  • Obtaining a job
  • Maintaining or improving your health.
  • Learning new skills 
  • Social and community engagement 

Understand what you’re entitled to.

A lack of awareness or a poor understanding of supports/services often leads to unsatisfactory outcomes. Every person is different and requires different services/supports to achieve their goals. Taking some time to read up on your entitlements is an excellent place to start; however, it can quickly get confusing. Receiving assistance from those in the know, such as Fine Care, will give you that edge to receive all the help you deserve from the NDIS. 

Bring a friendly face.

You are more than welcome to bring a support person such as a family member, a close friend or an advocate during your meeting. This way, you’ll have someone in your corner, pushing for your needs and goals and supporting your NDIS journey. Have your documents handy.

  • Information from your school or workplace connected to your needs.
  • Assessments, i.e. home modification assessments and care needs assessments.  

Decide on how you want to manage your NDIS funding.

During your plan meeting, you’ll have a choice of choosing either;

  • NDIS managed.
  • Plan managed.
  • Self-managed.
  • Or a combination.

At Fine Care, we are always committed to keeping our staff and clients safety at the highest priority when providing domestic cleaning services. In response to the current pandemic, we have implemented extra health and safety precautions to ensure that our customers and team remain protected from COVID-19.

Our change in policy makes sure that team members will:

  • Frequently handwash and use of an alcohol-based hand sanitiser before entering the premises.
  • Mandatory selective protective equipment including; gloves, face masks, shoe covers and clinical gowns.
  • Provide Contactless Biohazard Cleaning and sanitisation to all staff. 
  • Paying special attention in cleaning areas of high risk, i.e. handles, remotes, switches and more.
  • Staff are required to stay home if they are feeling unwell or come into contact with anyone affected by the virus.
